It’s been a long time since a nation of any consequence had a leader as immature and foolish as Donald Trump. We might have to go back to Romulus Augustus, the juvenal last Roman emperor. We see the child-like rantings of Trump each night on Truth Social, his very own social network. Unlike an increasing number of government buildings, Mr. Trump forgot to name Truth Social after himself.

Nations can collapse suddenly, but they usually deteriorate within for a considerable period before the impending collapse manifests itself. A clear example is the hollowing out of the British empire in the period from 1919 to 1939. The Brits didn't seem to notice what was happening until Hitler kicked over the table.

The United States is in a slow, quiet collapse right now. The Trump gang is busy picking at the bones of the country in the guise of ideological reform. None of the destruction would be possible without the continued passivity of the Congress. At any other time, any other president would have been impeached, convicted, and removed for both his criminal activity and his ineptitude. The man actually doesn’t seem to understand what’s happening. Each event in which the president participates seems to bring him back to his ballroom. We seem to have both mental illness and senility at work. I understand how this happened. Why the American people wished this calamity upon their nation is less clear.
